Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced on Monday that more than 3,000 North Korean soldiers have been killed or wounded in battles aimed at preventing a Ukrainian invasion of Russia's Kursk region .

According to Western reports, Pyongyang has sent thousands of troops to help Russian forces, especially in the Kursk border area where Ukraine launched a surprise attack last August

“Based on preliminary information, the number of dead and wounded North Korean soldiers in the Kursk area already exceeds 3,000,” Zelensky wrote on the X forum.

The Ukrainian president said he had received a report on the situation in the Kursk region from the army chief of staff, Oleksandr Sirsky.

He warned "about the risk of North Korea sending additional troops and military equipment to the Russian military."

Zelensky stressed that the world must understand that the "increasing cooperation between Moscow and Pyongyang" is increasing the "risk of instability around the Korean Peninsula and adjacent areas and waters."

For their part, the South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff said in a statement: “We estimate that 1,100 individual North Korean soldiers currently engaged in fighting with Ukrainian forces lost in dead and wounded. ”

He added that intelligence gathered by South Korea indicated that its northern neighbor was developing self-destructive drones and supplying them to Russia.

He added that Pyongyang also supplies Moscow with 170-mm artillery and coxan missiles with a range of 40 to 60 km, in addition to 240-mm artillery.

North Korea has never confirmed or denied adding troops to the Russian military. Since Moscow fought in Kiev in February 2022, the two countries have strengthened military ties.

Earlier this month, the Treaty on Mutual Defense signed by Moscow and Pyongyang in June went into effect, providing for an armed attack by a third country with “ immediate military assistance” was provided
