The Emergency Service of the Russian Foreign Ministry confirmed on Tuesday that the Russian cargo ship Ursa Major has run aground in the Mediterranean Sea off the coast of Spain. According to a post on its official Telegram account, the vessel capsized after an explosion in its engine room.

The Ursa Major had 16 crew members on board at the time of the incident, the department said; 14 were rescued by the Spanish coast guard and taken to the port of Cartagena. Two people are now missing.

The Ursa Major was passing through St. Petersburg. Petersburg and Vladivostok at the time of the incident. Left port Dec. 11 and is scheduled for Jan. 11. 22, according to the Marine Traffic rear ship office.

Spanish media first reported the incident early Tuesday. According to El Espanol , the explosion occurred on the afternoon of December 23 as the ship was heading east towards the Strait of Gibraltar. Uncredited video uploaded to X Tuesday morning shows the Ursa Major before it sank. Photos show the ship still afloat, with a large nameplate on the starboard side. 

The vessel was carrying empty containers at the time of the incident, the captain told Spanish media. But according to an earlier report by PortNews, which quoted operator and owner SK-Yege, the vessel was originally equipped with dock cranes, and icebreakers new ice caps and exported to the far east of Russia in port development infrastructure along the North Sea Route.
