Gazprom Halts Moldova Gas Supply |
Gazprom, Russia's state-controlled gas company, cut off natural gas supplies to Moldova on January 1, 2025, citing unpaid debts. This action, described by Moldova's prime minister as a political weapon, follows a significant price dispute where Moldova claims a much smaller debt than Gazprom alleges. Moldova, facing an energy crisis and pursuing EU membership, depends heavily on Transnistria for electricity, complicating its energy independence. The gas cutoff exacerbates Moldova's energy security emergency, declared earlier that month. The dispute predates the war in Ukraine.
