Time magazine has named Donald Trump Person of the Year. The decision followed his successful bid to return to the White House and become U.S. Secretary of State. after the 47th president.

“Since he began running for president in 2015, perhaps no single person has played a bigger role in changing the course of politics and history than Trump,” Time wrote.“Over the years, that choice will be difficult. Not in 2024.”

Other candidates who were on Time's short list included U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and tech billionaires Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg

Time magazine has been on the Person of the Year story since 1927, originally called “Man of the Year”. The award recognizes individuals or groups that have had the greatest impact, positive or negative, on the events of the year. Appointees over the decades have included political leaders, innovators and cultural figures.

Trump has appeared on the cover of Time magazine three times this year. Though he first appeared on the magazine's cover in 1989, he was often criticized, once calling the list of the 100 most influential people "a joke and a puzzle."

After German Chancellor Angela Merkel won the 2015 man of the year, Trump tweeted, “I told you TIME would never choose me as Person of the Year even though he was a huge favorite they chose a spoiler Germany”. But in 2016, when he was named Man of the Year, he called it “a great honor” in an interview with NBC News.
