Terror Strikes Mulhouse – One Dead, Five Injured in Knife Attack |
The attack erupted around 4:00 PM local time during a demonstration supporting the Democratic Republic of Congo. Witnesses reported the attacker shouting "Allahu Akbar" as he targeted municipal police officers and parking enforcement agents. A 69-year-old Portuguese man, who bravely intervened, tragically lost his life. Two parking control agents and three municipal police officers sustained injuries, with one officer in critical condition.
President Emmanuel Macron condemned the incident, unequivocally labeling it an "Islamist terrorist act." The suspect, already on the Terrorist Radicalization Prevention Reporting File, had been under judicial supervision and house arrest, facing an expulsion order from France.
The National Anti-Terrorism Prosecutor's Office has launched an investigation, dispatching a magistrate to oversee proceedings in Mulhouse. Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau announced plans to visit the city, emphasizing the government's commitment to addressing the threat of terrorism.
