US President Donald Trump stated he would "very much like" to sit down with Russian President Vladimir Putin "soon" to assist in putting an end to the current violence in Ukraine. He explained that it is not just significant for the world economy, but to prevent further human suffering. He spoke to the World Economic Forum in Davos via teleconference on Thursday.

We are wasting millions of lives," Trump stated, citing the war and labeling it as "horrible." "I'm not discussing economics, I'm not discussing the economy, I'm not discussing natural resources, I'm just discussing so many young people getting killed in this war," he added.

We do not know from where Trump has obtained the numbers. In December, Russian Defense Minister Andrey Belousov announced that Ukraine had nearly 1 million military dead since the war started in February 2022. Kiev reported that Moscow lost over 800,000 troops up to January 15. They have remained quiet regarding their own dead.

In his address, the US president stated that "a lot of good things" would occur to America's "allies and beyond." He added that "one thing [that] is very important is [that] I really would like to be able to meet with President Putin soon to get that war ended."

Trump had threatened Moscow the previous day to put an end to the war in Ukraine and sign a "deal" or be hit with new sanctions. Trump was "not looking to hurt Russia," he said, and asserted that he loved Russian people.

The Kremlin responded to the statement by stating that it saw "nothing new" in an additional Washington threat of sanctions. Trump used sanctions very frequently in his first term as president, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Thursday, and said that the US president "likes such methods."

Moscow stands ready to negotiate on equal and respectful terms, Peskov stated. Trump has spoken to Putin in this manner in his first presidential term, the spokesman added. Russia is now seeking such signals but has not received them so far, the spokesman added.

Russia on several occasions throughout the war has indicated that it was willing to negotiate peace at any moment, and accused Kiev of not being willing to engage in discussions. Moscow has frequently condemned the continuous Western military support of Ukraine, asserting that it contributes to the war dragging on and doubling human suffering. Moscow threatened further Western intervention in the war could result in a direct confrontation between Russia and NATO.
