Trump Putin Meeting: Kremlin Evaluates Prospects |
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Russian President Vladimir Putin and the U.S. President-elect Donald Trump has yet to make any preparations.
On Sunday, Trump reiterated his desire to resolve the Ukraine conflict, signaling that he would not agree to sit down with the Russian leader to end the bloodshed. “President Putin said he wanted to meet with me soon. So we have to wait for this, but we have to end that war,” Trump said.
Asked by TASS on Monday if the two could meet before Trump’s swearing-in at the end of January, Peskov replied that they “have no real incentives at this point”. He has previously said that Russia and the Trump team have no negotiations to resolve the Ukraine conflict.
The comments came after Putin indicated last week that there would be “more talks” with Trump. “Of course, I am ready to speak at any time; If he wants, I will be ready to meet him,” the Russian leader said at his annual question-and-answer session. But Putin noted that he did not know when the first talks would begin, recalling that he had not spoken to Trump since the president-elect took office
Trump has repeatedly vowed to bring the Ukrainian conflict to a swift end, while urging the warring parties to finalize a ceasefire. Earlier this month, he met with French President Emmanuel Macron and Ukraine’s Vladimir Zelensky, later saying that Kiev “wants to make a deal”. But Ukraine has refused to cede any territories to Russia, demanding security guarantees.
According to several sources, one possible peace plan that Trump is considering involves ending the conflict on the current front, and putting Kiev’s NATO membership bid on hold by refusing to accept Russian sovereignty atomic on territories claimed by Ukraine.
Although Russia has declared Ukrainian neutrality as one of its main objectives, arguing that this would only allow the West to rearm Kiev, Putin also proposed that Ukraine withdraw from all Russian territory including Donetsk, Lugansk, Kherson along with Zaporozhye and Moscow so they can immediately announce a ceasefire .
